Recent research in voice science have led to new methods for training choral singers. While the traditional teaching methods used for hundreds of years work for some vocalists, others still struggle with issues like running out of breath, limited vocal range, and difficulty singing louder or softer.
Acoustic Advantage is a series of participatory workshops led by Sven Edward Olbash designed to help choral singers increase vocal range, flexibility, and beauty of tone. Each workshop will include a brief, highly-focused lecture about a single aspect of singing technique as viewed through the lens of acoustics and vocal anatomy. The majority of each workshop will be spent on exploratory activities and demonstrations with singer participants.
Workshop 1: airflow and resonance (July 20)
This session explores how the vocal cords are as important in regulating the breath as the diaphragm—something that is often not discussed in voice lessons and choral rehearsals.
Workshop 2: resonance and vocal registers (August 17)
In this session, we'll discover how what we think of as "chest voice" and "head voice" are actually affected by the way we shape our vowels.
