Have you always wanted to figure out what makes Schoenberg a great composer, when his works are so seldom performed and usually difficult to comprehend? This series of 5 lecture/recitals on works of Arnold Schoenberg is designed for general concertgoers, to heighten your enjoyment and deepen your appreciation of his complex and challenging masterworks. These are "sandwich" concerts; each event consists of two performances of an important work, linked by an engaging talk, given by an established expert and enthusiastic teacher, with live demonstration of details by the performers. The series will cover all Schoenberg's periods (from tonal to edge-of-tonality to free atonal and dodecaphonic styles) and will encompass a variety of genres (solo piano, song cycle, string trio, a cappella chorus, and cabaret ensemble). It is organized and curated by Jonathan Khuner, Music Director of West Edge Opera, and presented by the Berkeley Hillside Club.
