Middle School

Whether you are an advanced beginner or an accomplished amateur musician, CMC’s chamber music program offers an opportunity to develop your musicianship and technique as well as the chance to play with others. Groups are composed of two to five students of compatible levels. Advanced beginners and intermediate students will focus on developing basic ensemble skills, intonation, tone quality, and rhythmic accuracy. Advanced students will study important aspects of ensemble playing, including interpretation and performance techniques.

CMC offers weekly, individual music therapy for students of all ages with special needs. This program is especially suitable for students with physical, emotional or developmental disabilities, and is led by an experienced Certified Music Therapist. Musical experience and life skills go hand-in-hand and music therapy offers individuals of all abilities the opportunity to experience self-empowerment through music. Students may develop musical skills and awareness as they work on physical, emotional or developmental goals.

Ensembles and orchestras rehearse weekly in Los Altos and perform at Flint Center, Spangenberg Theatre, Foothill College and the San Mateo Performing Arts Center throughout the year. Two levels of wind ensemble are directed by Rosita Amador.

The string ensembles (Junior String Ensemble and Intermediate String Ensemble) are under the direction of Kati Kyme.

The CYS Orchestra is the most advanced group, the CYS Associate Orchestra is Intermediate and Advanced. Both are conducted by Maestro Leo Eylar.

Limited to a small number of composers (usually less than ten), the Composition Program carefully tailors instruction for each participant through at least eight one-hour private lessons. Each emerging composer experiences all stages of the compositional process: sketching, planning, and development of musical ideas, score and parts preparation, rehearsal, and performance.

The Performance Program is designed to create a rich musical experience in solo and chamber music for sixty-five string players and pianists from the US and the rest of the world, ranging in age from teenagers to young adults. There is ample time for individual practice, lessons and ensemble coachings, encouraging growth both technically and musically. Each participant is assigned to a compatible chamber music group that fosters team building skills across cultures and creates a deeper understanding of chamber music.

Our group lessons and ensembles have included, guitar class, rock band, brass ensemble and jazz combo.
