Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame

Presented by West Bay Opera

Pique Dame Rendering of Act 1 Scene 1 by Peter Crompton

For the reopening of its 67th Season, West Bay Opera presents Pique Dame, one Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful scores. Hermann, a penniless soldier, falls in love with Liza, a young aristocratic woman. But it is her grandmother the countess, once a great beauty popular at the Court in Versailles, who holds the key to Hermann’s love and fortune. Tchaikovsky’s reinterpretation of Pushkin’s story about love and a gambling addiction, set in the splendor of Saint Petersburg during the reign of Catherine the Great, is the perfect antidote to the barbarism we are witnessing today.
