St. Luke’s is a place that values music and offers carefully curated musical offerings to the community, bringing to life ancient treasures, beloved favorites, and newly composed music. Choral music is at the center of our tradition and is supported by our beautiful 1960 Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ and our pre-evensong organ concerts are a wonderful opportunity to hear our Aeolian-Skinner as a solo instrument.
Guest recitalist James Parrish Smith is Director of Music and the Arts at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley and the Artistic Director of the Charles A. Tindley Academy of Music. Formerly he served as Principal Organist of the Historic Third Baptist Church of San Francisco. Mr. Smith is also an ordained minister who has served in musical leadership in prominent churches in Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama, most notably serving the Historic Sixth Avenue Baptist Church of Birmingham, Alabama.
Some of the most beautiful music in the choral literature has been composed for the service of Evensong. This rich musical history is enhanced and expanded today by a new generation of living composers. Our march 23 Evensong choral music will include compositions by Rachel Portman, Maxine Thévenot, and Mel Bonis.
Whether you are a regular attendee or a curious listener, we welcome you to experience the gift of music at St. Luke’s.
