Hours of Freedom is a concert-drama created by Murry Sidlin, who for 32 years co-directed the Aspen Festival with David Zinman. Hours of Freedom showcases music by 15 composers imprisoned in Terezín during WWII, using a combination of video, performance and narrative. The event is part of the Jewish Music Series, now in its seventh year at Sonoma State University.
Aware that their lives were fragile and that deportations to the east were a constant reality, Hours of Freedom explores the need to create new music as affirmation of a future. Among the composers represented are Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein, Zikmund Schul, Pavel Haas, Rudolf Karel and ten others.
Sidlin will be in residence at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park from September 11-15. He will conduct the performance orchestra comprised of faculty and student musicians.
The performance is part of SSU's Jewish Studies Program class entitled Survey of Jewish Musics. Free admission, no tickets required. The daily parking fee is $5. Save time! Print your pass at home.
