Three top emerging talents join to present an evening offering musical resolutions to the ominous turbulence of our time.
Saturday May 25th Trio Barclay performs Beethoven’s Trio in D Major Op. 70, “Ghost”, followed by Sheridan Seyfried’s Piano Trio (2021) at the intimate Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco.
Both works, in their own way, encompass the audience in a journey through gigantic moods, giving powerful voice to ominous fear, gripping tension, and wailing grief, only to surrender to joyful relief, exultation, and eventually serenity. If you thrill at the intense of range of human emotion, or crave resolution of the tensions in life now, both of these will more than gratify you for an evening’s journey. Strap yourself to the mast tightly.
Your crew for this night are three of the most lauded young classical musicians in the world:
Multi-award winning Steinway artist, pianist Sean Kennard has appeared in recital and as soloist with orchestras around the world, and his discography includes highly acclaimed solo and chamber music releases on Naxos, Delos, and Centaur. Sean Kennard is a star piano soloist with a remarkably flexible and collaborative approach as a chamber musician. Sean’s impressive list of musical accomplishments includes albums for the Centaur, Delos, and Naxos labels and a 2017 appointment to Stetson University. Described as a “strong, luminous pianist” by The Washington Post, Sean’s playing is also characterized by great delicacy, as displayed in his recording of the highly intricate and charming sonatas of Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti. Sean brings to Trio Barclay a commitment to musical integrity and an easy-going demeanor that belies the seriousness of his approach.
Violinist Dennis Kim has spent more than a decade leading orchestras in the United States, Europe and Asia. He was first appointed concertmaster of the Tucson Symphony at the age of 22. He then served as the youngest concertmaster in the history of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, before going on to lead the Seoul Philharmonic and the Tampere Philharmonic in Finland. Most recently, he was concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic in New York, where he has annually been a featured soloist, and is currently concertmaster of the Pacific Symphony. Coached by Isaac Stern, Felix Galimir, and Claude Frank, Dennis has since gone on to collaborate with such artists as Pinchas Zukerman, Jaime Laredo, and members of the Guarneri and Tokyo String Quartets.
Grammy Award-winning cellist Jonah Kim made his solo debut with Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2003. The same year, he also appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra where the Washington Post critic Joseph McLellan called him simply, "the next Yo-Yo Ma." Highly sought after internationally as a chamber musician, Kim has recently collaborated with world class artists Jon Nakamatsu, Martin Beaver, Bella Hristova, Ian Swensen, Scott Yoo, and Chee-Yun Kim. In addition, Kim has played in live concerts with pop figures including The Beach Boys, Andrea Bocelli, Vic Damone, Regis Philbin, Kenny Rogers, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Currently, he is an associate principal cello for San Francisco Ballet Orchestra.
