Season Description: “Passing the Baton”
Now for only the third time in 64 years, The Wind Symphony is about to name a new conductor, a leader who can carry forward the legacies of Darrell Johnston and Edward C. Harris while at the same time making their own mark on SJWS. This season, we have selected four finalists from the pool of applicants. Each finalist will get the chance to program, rehearse and conduct a San Jose Wind Symphony concert.
This May 21, we are delighted to welcome our fourth guest conductor to the podium: Dr. Danielle Gaudry, Associate Professor of Music at California State University, East Bay, where she serves as Director of Bands and Coordinator of Instrumental Music.
Concert Description:
“Music and Muses” highlights music that was inspired by other art forms — from fine art, to theatre, to poetry, to short stories, and of course, to dance. This program will delight you with forays into art in many different forms.
The concert is an intoxicating mix of classics and contemporary works, including Norman Dello Joio's "Scenes from the Louvre" and "Ballet Parisien" by Jacques Offenbach. And lest you think this concert is just for Francophiles, for dance enthusiasts, we will present Arturo Marquez’s “Conga Del Fuego Nuevo, “Terpsichorean Dances” by Jodie Blackshaw, as well as Florence B. Price’s “Three Negro Dances.”
Literature is represented by “Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre based on Rudyard Kipling’s poem, and Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem,” Contre Qui, Rose,” is put to music by Morten Lauridsen.
The centerpiece of the concert is a dramatic work by composer Viet Cuong, "Sound and Smoke," derived from a line from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's play Faust.
Join us and celebrate all the arts!
