Michael Tilson Thomas & the SF Symphony
This November, Music Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas returns to Davies Symphony Hall to lead star-studded performances with the San Francisco Symphony.
First up, Gautier Capuçon takes the stage with MTT and the Symphony to unveil the U.S. premiere of a cello concerto by celebrated film composer Danny Elfman. Framing this premiere are two works of dramatic flair and sumptuous romance: Igor Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.
Next, pianist Emanuel Ax joins MTT and the Orchestra for Johannes Brahms’ tempestuous First Piano Concerto, a work that foreshadowed the young composer’s reputation as the true heir of Beethoven. Also included in this program: Another early Brahms showpiece, the small but mighty Serenade No. 1.
