When string players think about music that we can play by ourselves, most of us instinctively think of Bach, but there was a rich repertoire of solo pieces written for the violin family in the 17th century. We will dive into this lesser-known repertoire for unaccompanied cello. Since these pieces also coincide with major changes in the use and physical construction of the instrument, we will also discuss how the cello developed out of the early violin band in the 16th century, and what caused the cello to be pushed into a more versatile instrument in the 17th and 18th centuries.
