Johann Mattheson believed that music was the straightest path to the soul because of its ability to move the spirits, and that a musician ought to know something about emotions in order to arouse them! He also wrote in his autobiography that as a young man he perceived the sound of the recorder to be the most beautiful sound in the world! His XII Sonatas for two and three recorders published in Amsterdam in 1708 shed light on his love for the recorder. Technically accessible for most levels, they are little forgotten gems that allow us to express a host of emotions - which we will do in this class. We will play two of my favorites from this collection, which both happen to be in G minor - number III and number IX.
