Jean-Baptiste Loeillet de Gant published his Opus 1 around 1710 as a set of 12 sonatas for recorder and continuo. Shortly thereafter, those sonatas reappeared as recorder duets, with a new second recorder part quite different from the original continuo line. We’ll sample both versions, consider what changed to make the duets work better, and tackle the pesky mystery of all of those composers named Loeillet.
