Explore the distinctive interplay between the Spanish language, music, and dance, with a little help from the New World. We'll start exploring the sound world of Renaissance Spain: ground bass variations (La Folía, anyone?) plus the ubiquitous villancico and sixteenth-century poetry. Then, we'll take a voyage to the New World and look at some polyphony from 1599 Mexico City. Last, we'll plunge into the early seventeenth century and see what happens when the Italians arrive in Spain.
All levels welcome.
