Sing and play along with eighteenth-century French opera excerpts from Rameau’s Les Indes galantes as we apply a critical lens to Rameau’s representation of the Other in this work, supported by musical examples performed by Grammy award-winning early music specialist Aaron Sheehan.
Learn about eighteenth-century French opéra-ballet and consider a critical approach to cultural difference as it unfolds in the first entrée (Act 1) of Les Indes galantes, “Le Turc genereux.” We will also consider French ornamentation, aspects of performance practice, ariette (aria), and style, all useful additions to your musical toolbox. Music, materials, and play-along recordings will be provided in advance. We will focus on the ariette, “Hâtez vous de vous embarquer” for tenor voice (sopranos and soprano instruments can play 8va) and the instrumental works, “Tambourins I and II.” Join us to explore the culturally rich and expressive sonic world of French opera performed by Grammy award-winning singer Aaron Sheehan!
