This class will consider dance forms (courante, gigue, etc.) that feature prominently in Baroque instrumental suites.
After a brief overview of the history and development of a few instrumental dance forms, we will discuss their specific characteristics and national variations. We will consider dance and instrumental treatises. Once we have examined a dance form, there will be a play-along with each to ingrain their nuances and rhythms. We will also consider how composers developed these dance forms in unique and interesting ways.
