Join Bruce Dickey and Linda Pearse for a lecture and playing session that considers two exquisite polychoral motets setting the psalm Dixit Dominus – one each by Claudio Monteverdi and Amante Franzoni.
The surprising musical resonances between the Vesper psalm settings of Claudio Monteverdi (Venice, 1610) and Amante Franzoni (Venice, 1619) supply ample food for a musician’s imagination. The composers’ time in the service of the Gonzaga court in Mantua overlapped during the early years of the seventeenth century and again upon Franzoni’s return to Mantua in 1612 and prior to Monteverdi’s departure for Venice in 1614. Several works demonstrate a musical influence that moves not only in one direction. The two psalm settings of the Dixit Dominus that we will consider in this presentation demonstrate Monteverdi’s continuing influence in Mantua long after his departure for Venice, and at the same time profile Amante Franzoni, a composer who, during Monteverdi’s tenure in Mantua, was skilled and influential. We will consider the setting of the psalm tone, the organization, structure, and texture of each work, as well as the implications for performance. Segments of lecture will be complemented with listening and performance opportunities.
