Early Modern Women in Music, Art and Culture: Susanne un jour

Many Sixteenth-century dances, madrigals and chansons were written over the story of Susanna and the Elders. The 1548 poem by Guillaume Gueroult Susanne un jour, tells the story of the biblical Susanna, a woman who stood up against evil men. This class will follow a selection of musical settings on Susanna, including the famous chanson by Orlando di Lassus, Susanna fair by English composer William Byrd, a setting by the Flemish Jean de Castro, and John Dowland’s Susanna Galliard.

A=440; class series suited for softs and louds, as well as the gentle and daring.
