A=415; appropriate for all players.
This class will offer a quick survey of the basic building blocks of baroque violin and viola technique. For the baroque-curious, this can serve as an introduction to the many ways early string technique is different from modern technique. For the experienced player, it can be a helpful reminder of the basics of what we do as baroque string players—a valuable topic to periodically revisit even for the most advanced players. We will consider how one holds the instrument and the bow, as described in the treatises and informed by experience, and participants will play along in examples from the treatises and excerpts from the baroque repertoire as we consider the complex interaction between left and right hands.
