Daphna Mor and Daniel Freedman: Exploring the Art of Maqamat (3 of 4)

Presented by San Francisco Early Music Society

Daphna Mor & Daniel Freedman, Workshop Instructors

A=440; for intermediate and advanced players of melodic instruments.

Daphna Mor returns to SFEMS alongside colleagues to delve into the art of Maqamat*.

Maqamat, plural of maqam,, is a system of melodic modes in music from Arab and Turkish origin) and rhythmic patterns from the Middle East and North Africa–repertoire not yet covered in Daphna’s previous SFEMS courses.

Note: this repertoire requires microtones which we will help you find on your instrument.

Daniel and Daphna will focus on rhythmic basic percussion patterns from North Africa and Arab origins, simple ways of embellishing the basic patterns, and how the rhythmic patterns fit with melodies from the region. For singers and instrumentalists.
