Inkling / Pictures At An Exhibition: A Multimedia Orchestra Experience is a unique intersection between orchestral music, abstract animation, and neuroscience. By using multi-projection, musicians surrounding the gallery space, and cutting edge electroencephalography (EEG) technology, Inkling is an immersive representation of the neural processes during an artist’s creative state. Alongside Inkling is a multimedia performance of Modest Mussorgsky’s monumental Pictures at an Exhibition, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel, incorporating Viktor Hartmann’s paintings that inspired the musical work.
Conductor/composer Jaco Wong and musicians from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music have partnered with animation artist Evan Tedlock, Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Department of Visual Arts and neuroscientist Enrique Vargas, M.D., candidate at the University of California – San Francisco Sound & Music Perception Lab, to create this dynamic experience, bringing art and science relevant and appealing to the 21st-century audience.
