The Second Sunday Basilica Recital Series is pleased to present Music for Reed Organ and Strings, featuring reed organist, MICHAEL HENDRON, violinists, MAKI ISHII SOWASH and MICHAEL LONG, and cellist, INGRID BELLMAN.
Music of the romantic period include compositions by Dvorak, Fitzenhagen, Popp, and Svendsen.
MICHAEL HENDRON is the Principal Verger at Grace Cathedral, and is a former President of the Reed Organ Society. His California performances include solo recitals and small concerts in Grace Cathedral, Mission Dolores, St. Dominic’s, and at Stanford University; Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle with Schola Cantorum in Saratoga and with the Santa Clara Chorale; Masses by Widor and Vierne with the Palo Alto Congregational Oratorio Society. For 30 years, Michael has researched the repertoire composed for the American reed organ and the European harmonium. Many examples may be found on this YouTube channel: Mustel1887.
Maki Ishii Sowash, violin. Maki’s world changed dramatically when she fell madly in love with the dashing Spanish tenor Jose Carreras at age 11. She has had many crushes since, more singers than instrumentalists perhaps because her first love in music is still the lyric voice. She has pursued her passions in Italy and Spain where she studied with Felix Ayo. Today she makes her home in SF with her husband and her cats and a family of Bernese Mountain Dogs.
Maki has been a member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra since 1990.
The program is free and donations are accepted in support of the Basilica Music Ministries
