Under the baton of Louis Langrée, the LA Phil brings out the feverish passion of two rich Romantic works. Robert Schumann’s Fourth Symphony builds upon a motif based on his wife’s name. The “Clara theme,” as it became known, shifts and meanders throughout the symphony’s ominous opening, intense scherzo, and joyous finale.
Brahms’ intense yet intimate Second Piano Concerto displays the composer’s limitless creativity, allowing pianist Sunwook Kim to confidently push the boundaries of tonality and “grasp every single nuance in the score with poise and natural ease” (The Guardian).
