Grace Cathedral, in partnership with Art Processors, Against the Grain Theatre, Chicago Sinai and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, presents TILT, a concert with contributions spanning cultures, countries and communities. Held each year on the universally-celebrated summer solstice, TILT resonates loudly in 2021 as many nations emerge from the darkness of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Never before has it been possible to travel in one day to hear music at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Chicago Sinai, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, and the wild landscapes of Canada.
The name “TILT” references the angle of the sun at solstice but also the idea of offering a fresh perspective on sacred spaces and classical music. All of the offerings are related to the idea of light.
Performances include:
● From Grace Cathedral’s central labyrinth, Singers Stacee Firestone and Kenneth Kellogg, accompanist and music director Ronny Michael Greenberg, and Dancer Terrence Paschal
● From Against the Grain Theatre’s new interpretation of Handel’s Messiah with Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Looee Arreak, Diyet and Deantha Edmunds sing arias in Inuttitut and Southern Tutchone — outdoors in natural environments in celebration of Canada’s First Nations and underrepresented voices
● The grand organ of Notre-Dame played by Titular Organist, Olivier Latry, accompanied by a drone fly-through of the cathedral
● The Professional Choir of Chicago Sinai singing Leornard Bernstein classics
TILT gives us the opportunity to pause on the longest day of the year, to take a breath, and experience beautiful music in sacred spaces. Please join us.
Grace Cathedral’s TILT will be livestreamed on June 20 at sunset in each of the partner cities. Tickets are now available.
