Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 6, 7 and 8, at 7:30 pm and a matinee Sunday, October 9, at 3 pm
Garrett + Moulton Productions (GMP) celebrates its 20th anniversary October 6-9 with the world premieres of a new work by choreographer Janice Garrett and an animated film by Charles Moulton. In addition, the company of 18 dancers and 6 musicians will perform Garrett's Roll Out, which premiered in the Fall of 2021. Music will be performed live with conductor Jonathan Russell, long-time GMP collaborator, soprano Karen Clark and six instrumentalists.
The 20th anniversary performances feature the world premiere of a new work by Janice Garrett, Threnody, an intimate, expressive quintet that investigates the deep feeling states and emotions that surround shared experiences of love and loss. Set to a selection of baroque arias and instrumental music by Bach, Handel, Purcell and Rameau featuring soprano Karen Clark, the work continues Garrett's long-running choreographic exploration of the binding nature of collective experience and the uplifting support found in our shared humanity.
The premiere of Charles Moulton's first ever animated film, Angry Bear, features the choreographer, director, visual artist, author and filmmaker's colorful drawings and text in a collaboration with designer/animator Olivia Ting and composer Christopher Benstead. The film is both whimsical and poignant; a journey through a landscape of pure imagination. The text has autobiographical points of reference such as Moulton's experiences dancing with Merce Cunningham and working with John Cage as metaphors for the broader interconnections of the creative experience and artistic evolution.
Completing the evening will be the reprise of Garrett's ebullient and affirmative 2021 large group work, Roll Out. Eighteen dancers and six musicians joyously careen through a tour-de-force celebration of emerging from times of challenge with hope and energy.
