The Pro Arte Quartet is a wonderful combination of four artists who have been together since 1995; David Perry and Suzanne Beia, violin; Sally Chisholm, viola; and Parry Karp, cello. They are a vibrant group that are the current members of the Pro Arte Quartet, originally founded in 1912 and now over 110 years old. The Washinton Post writes that “the four players sound as if they were born to perform together; they honor to the name that have inherited”.
The artists have been the faculty string quartet at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since the late 1950s. They were actually the first residency in a major university in 1938; and served as a model for future artistic residencies across the country. They are also the resident quartet of the Chazen Museum of Art.
David Perry, violinist, enjoys an international career as musician, soloist and teacher. He is currently the concertmaster of the Chicago Philharmonic and has been a frequent guest concertmaster with many symphonies across the world
Suzanne Beia, second violinist of the Pro Arte Quartet, is also concertmaster of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Madison Opera and associate concertmaster of the Madison Symphony. She performs regularly with the Chicago Philharmonic and Heart String’s Rhapsodie Quartet, an outreach program of the Madison Symphony.
Sally Chishom, violist of the Pro Arte Quartet is also a founding member of the Thouvenel String Quartet. She is Principal Violist of the Chicago Philharmonic and Joffrey Ballet at Lincoln Center. Her students have gone on to major roles, such as Principal Violist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Assistant Principal of the Boston Symphony and violist of the Ariana Quartet.
Cellist Perry Karp is director of the string chamber music program and the University of Wisconsin and has been the longest serving member for over the past 45 years of the Pro Arte Quartet. Unearthing and performing many neglected repertoire for cello is a passion of Perry Karp’s
The Pro Arte Quartet will provide a rich, adventurous and rewarding chamber music concert presented by Stockton’s Friends of Chamber Music. Come enjoy the concert.
Tickets are $30 and are available in the lobby of Faye Spanos Concert Hall at UOP starting at 2:00 pm,
30 minutes before the concert. Students of any age are admitted free.
The audience is invited to participate in a question and answer program with the artists in the concert hall following the concert.
