Classical chamber choir Ensemble Continuo, accompanied by David Jonies on organ, is performing Maurice Duruflé’s "Requiem." This mid-20th-century masterpiece for choir, soli, and organ evolves the classical themes of Gregorian chants into delicately atonal narratives that typify the harmonic innovations of the Impressionist movement. The concert program also includes Duruflé’s "Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens" and "Psaume" by Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), a French composing prodigy whose Symbolism- and Impressionism-inspired work at a young age established her among the last century's woman composers.
This concert will take place at Oakland's Cathedral of Christ the Light, a stunning venue with a 5,298 pipe organ that the East Bay Times called a "musical jewel." David Jonies, director of music and organist at Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, who has also held positions at the Westminster Cathedral in London, will play the cathedral's famous organ.
