Colburn Orchestra: Brahms's Symphony No. 3

Presented by The Colburn School

Colburn Orchestra on stage at the Ambassador Auditorium

Carlos Miguel Prieto and Aleksandra Melaniuk, Conductors
Bence Bubreg, Clarinet

The renowned flagship ensemble of the Colburn Conservatory of Music opens an exhilarating three-concert season at the Ambassador Auditorium with a program of soulful masterworks filled with musical and emotional turmoil. In Nielson’s single-movement concerto, the virtuosic clarinet wages war with an insistent snare drum while the work shifts between key signatures, textures, and styles. The battle continues in Brahms’s Third Symphony, which exudes the composer’s characteristic angst as it alternates between major and minor, outcries and whispers. The tragic tale of loss and longing told in the prelude to Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde rounds out the program.

The Colburn Orchestra is generously underwritten by Eva and Marc Stern.
