Join us to revel in the beauty of Bach's magnificent cantatas.
Our September Cantata program introduced us all to two types of Bach’s trumpets—the natural trumpet and the tromba da tirarsi (slide trumpet). The two cantatas on our next concert feature the splendor of the double reed family: Oboes in 3 sizes! The ‘normal’ Baroque oboe, the oboe d’amore, and the oboe da caccia—an instrument that was developed in Leipzig during Bach’s lifetime. He used this instrument to great effect in his cantatas and passions.
With a baroque bassoon added to the oboe trifecta, the woodwind sound profile becomes extraordinarily rich and complex. And with the expanded possibilities of four-part writing in strings, voices, AND the woodwinds, Bach has even more compositional “cool tools” to play with. The miraculous results are not to be missed!
