What’s Interesting About This Program
- George Walker was the first African American composer to win a Pulitzer Prize. His hauntingly beautiful Lyric for Strings is Walker’s best known and most-performed works.
- After an acclaimed 2018 debut with the California Symphony and a 2020 virtual finale recital, Bay Area native Alexi Kenney returns in person to perform Vivaldi’s iconic Four Seasons.
- Jessie Montgomery is one of the most notable composers of her generation. Starburst is a brief one-movement work that plays on imagery of rapidly changing musical colors.
- Some 70 years after Schubert composed his intimate Death and the Maiden quartet, Mahler blew it up for string orchestra in this arrangement. The piece explores the range of human emotions, from dark and heavy to positive and optimistic.
Patrons must be fully vaccinated, and masks are required inside the venue. For details, please visit www.californiasymphony.org/COVIDsafety. Thank you for your cooperation!
