"The Orpheus of Amsterdam": Music of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck

Presented by Barefoot Chamber Concerts

Barefoot Chamber Concerts (“an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality” – San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events.

Barefoot’s March 11th concert sees the return of local and national harpsichord star Janine Johnson, who will play a concert of music by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562 –1621). Sweelinck’s incredible music is a bridge between the late renaissance and early baroque styles, and he is credited with originating the fugue style which was perfected by Bach a century later. He came by his nickname “The Orpheus of Amsterdam” because of his skill as a master improviser. His compositions also seem like written out improvisations.

This concert will feature Janine’s fabulous new(ish) harpsichord, a copy of a German short-octave 17th century instrument by (of course) John Phillips.

Please check the Barefoot Chamber Concerts website for the Covid protocol near the date of the concert!  As of right now, 2/23/22, Barefoot Chamber Concerts will require masks, proof of vaccination, and maintaining 6’ distance between parties.
