The Red Poppy Art House is a nice space for music and Charith Premawardhana and Classical Revolution have done a great job presenting young and inspiring acts there. This week, they bring in another strong group of musicians, the Vinca Quartet. Though the repertory is traditional (Mozart and Schubert), the quartet playing it is strongly original, and is trailblazing paths that connect music and science (via the Hertz Foundation) and is advertising its interest in music education. (They'll be attached to the Perlman/ Suncoast Foundation as resident artists teaching students in Florida schools for the 2010-11 year.)
Individually, the musicians are extremely distinguished for young players. Violist Laura Seay is on the pre-collegiate faculty at Juilliard; cellist An-Lin Bardin served as a teaching associate to the Takács Quartet at the University of Colorado; violinist Jessica Tong has received a Canada Council for the Arts Grant for Professional Musicians, and has soloed with a number of orchestras in her native Canada; and violinist Aaron Requiro has performed recitals across the U.S., as well as well as serving on the faculties of a number of summer music festivals, including Music@Menlo.
