Volti, San Francisco's premier contemporary music vocal ensemble, opens its 2022-2023 season with a fascinating double bill of world premieres including Ochre by Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw and Ink by Rome Prize-winner Pamela Z, led by Valerie Saint-Agathe, Artistic Director of the San Francisco Girls Chorus, in her Volti debut as guest conductor.
Co-commissioned by Volti, The Crossing, Cantori New York and Notre Dame Vocale, Ochre is a multi-movement work described by the composer as an exploration of "how we consider and care for the ground beneath our feet, the Earth, ourselves, our histories, and our sense of the scale of our lives in the context of geological history. It is also about color, and the sensation of music as color or as a complex concoction of materials that we perceive as a kind of color."
Previously premiered online in April 2021 as part of Volti's 2020-2021 digital streaming season, Pamela Z's Ink has been reimagined for live performance using video and audio media in conjunction with live singing and elements of performance art. This new work explores five sonically distinct movements using standard notation, graphic elements, instructions and rote transmission of sung and spoken vocal material.
