Symphony Parnassus opens their spring concert with a world premier violin concerto written and performed by SF Symphony violinist Sarn Oliver. Written in stages between 2019 and 2024 the work reflects the composer’s experiences with isolation and the loss of both parents. The concerto is in four movements starting with a violin cadenza and develops in dialogue with numerous solo instruments in the orchestra.
The program concludes with Aaron Copland’s Third Symphony which stands as a quintessential American masterpiece. Written during World War II it echoes the spirit of a nation during a challenging time. In the three movement work, Copland explores themes of resilience and optimism using his signature style to celebrate the American identity. He blends classical traditions with folk and popular influences and features his own “Fanfare for a Common Man” as a nostalgic nod.
