Virtual Virtuosos Present The Fremont String Quartet

Presented by St. Ignatius Church

Our music-makers for this evening are a quartet called FSQ. Fremont String Quartet. They hail from the Bay Area and are Principal Players of the Fremont Symphony orchestra. They are Philip Santos and Jessica Poll on violin, Katy Juneau on viola and Dan Reiter who is the resident composer/arranger and cellist. In the last few years, they have been interested in bringing under-represented works and composer to the fore. For this concert we are hoping to honor current social justice efforts, amplify diverse voices, and bring comfort and beauty during challenging times by highlighting the music of Florence Price. Florence Price became the first black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra in 1933. The discovery of dozens of scores in an Illinois attic in 2009 led to renewed interest in the music of Florence Price, leading to performances and recordings and critical acclaim. Her music combines a rich, romantic symphonic idiom with the melodic intimacy and emotional intensity of African-American spirituals. Included on the program are two works by William Grant Still, an African American conductor and composer who spent his formative years growing up in the same town as Florence Price…Little Rock Arkansas.
