Presented by Sierra Chamber Society

The Sierra Chamber Society suffered a last-minute cancellation of its 33rd season opening performance due to nearby fires and power outages. After assembling a daunting puzzle involving time, space and personnel, the Sierra Chamber Society is excited to announce a rescheduled performance at in the Fireside Room at Rossmoor, 1001 Golden Rain Road, in Walnut Creek, a venue very nearby its regular performance space. The program is slightly modified for what was originally planned, as detailed below.
The Sierra Chamber Society is very excited to introduce its audience to violinist Wyatt Underhill, the SF Symphony's new Assistant Concertmaster, and to welcome back one of our favorite virtuosic performers, Helen Kim, the SF Symphony's Associate Principal Second Violinist. She and the SF Symphony's redoubtable pianist Marc Shapiro will perform one of Beethoven's most delightful early violin/piano sonatas. The rest of the program is as it was, including the exciting premiere of "Anachronisms," a quintet for piano and winds (including tuba, surely a rarity in chamber ensembles) by composer and SCS program annotator Joseph Way whose klezmir-infused, jazzy works, three of which the SCS has premiered in recent seasons, have charmed and delighted SCS audiences.
As Steven Lowe, program annotator for the Seattle Symphony and regular SCS pre-concert speaker is temporarily unavailable, Joseph Way, not just a brilliant composer and program annotator, but also an insightful and entertaining lecturer, will offer pre-concert remarks at 3 PM.
AGAIN,PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE TIME AND LOCATION! Please use the Rossmoor main entrance on Rossmoor Parkway, which intersects with Tice Valley Blvd about 1/10 of a mile west of Grace Presbyterian Church, our regular concert venue.
In addition, the Sierra Chamber Society invites you to subscribe to its 2019-20 (33rd) concert season at a substantial savings over individual ticket purchases. As always, SCS audience members can look forward to both familiar and surprising works performed with polish and panache.
In its 33rd season, The Sierra Chamber Society welcomes back our enduring friends from the San Francisco Symphony, and distinguished guests, including the acclaimed Telegraph String Quartet, winners of the 2016 International Walter Naumburg International Chamber Music Competition, and the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble.
Just to highlight a couple of entries in this exciting season: There will be two SCS premieres: As mentioned, a new work by program annotator and composer Joseph Way and, on March 15, 2020, "Contrapassos for Voice and String Quartet," a SCS commission from eminent American composer Robert Sirota (www.robertsirota.com) with libretto by SCS director and pianist Stevan Cavalier, performed by the Telegraph String Quartet joined by the phenomenal soprano/ mezzosoprano Abigail Fischer, described by The NY Times as “Luminous,” by Timeout NY as “Spellbinding” and as “Sumptuous” by the Boston Globe. (www.abigailfischer.com). Details about the rest of our 33rd concert season can be found at http://www.sierrachamber.com.
The SCS continues to offer FLEX TICKETS: Although your tickets will be dated as usual, you will be able to use any number of your season’s tickets at any concert, space permitting. Use them one at a time, all at one performance, or in any combination. And, of course, if you can’t attend, giving your tickets to friends is a wonderful way to share your enthusiasm for the Sierra Chamber Society.
