Nicknamed the "tragic" symphony, it is both Mahler's grimmest work, yet filled with joy and optimism. There is no other Mahler symphony like this; it foretells much of the composer’s life, including the loss of a child. Contrasting moments of light briefly shine through as the piece builds toward a massive epic finale, complete with giant hammer blows of fate.
