Pittance Chamber Music presents Liv a Little! Treat yourself to an afternoon of exquisite song and chamber music with soprano Liv Redpath, clarinetist Stuart Clark and members of the LA Opera Orchestra. Hailed by the press as "luminous", "stunning" and "a revelation", Liv Redpath is a radiant new presence on the opera and concert stage. Don’t miss her only Los Angeles appearance in the 2019-20 season, on Saturday, January 11, 2020; 3:00 p.m. at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. The program includes Schubert’s sublime Shepherd on the Rock and Aribert Reimann’s Eight Lieder by Mendelssohn set to poetry by Heinrich Heine, for soprano and string quartet. Each song is connected by instrumental interludes written by Reimann.
The program also includes the resplendent Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115 by Johannes Brahms, featuring Stuart Clark who is currently Principal Clarinet with Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. He received his music education at the Royal College of Music in London, graduating with honors. In his postgraduate year he was awarded an exchange fellowship to study at UCLA and furthered his studies at USC. In addition to the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Clark has performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Spokane Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, Pacific Symphony and New West Symphony. An ardent chamber musician, he has performed with Jacaranda, Capitol Ensemble, Infrequency and the New Hollywood String Quartet. In addition to live performances, Clark plays regularly as a recording musician for television and film scores, working for composers such as John Williams, Alexandre Desplat and Hans Zimmer.
This concert was moved from the original February 9th date in order to accommodate Redpath’s performance schedule at Deutsch Oper Berlin, where she will be singing the leading role of Marguerite de Valois in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots. Additional roles this season include the part of Salome in Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista directed by Christopher Alden and conducted by Stephen Stubbs at Opera Omaha. Redpath will also cover the role of Sophie in Robert Carsen’s production of Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss at the Metropolitan Opera. Concert appearances include Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with conductor Yaniv Dinur and the New Bedford Symphony and Mozart’s Requiem with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Richard Egarr.
While a member of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist at LA Opera, Redpath made her role debut as Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel conducted by James Conlon, also singing the Voce dal cielo in Verdi’s Don Carlo. Redpath has also appeared with the Los Angeles Master Chorale at Walt Disney Concert Hall for a pairing of Mozart’s Requiem and Kirchner’s Songs of Ascent, and with the Pacific Symphony in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges as Le feu/La Princesse/Le rossignol. In the summer of 2018, Redpath presented a concert of Handel and Rameau arias with Christophe Rousset, reprised the role of Zerbinetta in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos for Cincinnati Opera and covered Bess in Breaking the Waves at the Edinburgh International Festival.
Redpath has worked with renowned conductors James Conlon, Plácido Domingo, William Christie, James Levine, Emmanuel Villaume, James Gaffigan, Stephen Lord, Bramwell Tovey, and Matthew Aucoin, as well as stage directors Francesca Zambello, Paul Curran, Ed Berkeley, James Robinson, Tim Albery, and Mark Lamos, among others. She has been awarded prizes from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Palm Springs Opera Guild, Houston Grand Opera’s Eleanor McCollum Competition, The Opera Index Competition, The Loren L. Zachary Society, and the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation. Additionally, Redpath had the honor of performing for the First Lady of China, Mme. Peng Liyuan. A graduate of Harvard University and The Juilliard School, Redpath attended the Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artists’ Vocal Academy, was an Apprentice Artist with The Santa Fe Opera, a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, a Studio Artist for Wolf Trap Opera, and a Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist with LA Opera.
