The AfroSpace of Sun Ra

The AfroSpace of Sun Ra explores the connection between the revolutionary ideas of African American intellectual music and writings of afro-futurist Sun Ra and the decades of research and the research exploring mental wellness through the power of music and poetry by Finnish poet and journalist Markku Salo.

Markku Salo currently lives in Kerava Finland and holds a doctorate in Sociology from University of Tampere with an emphasis in Psychiatric Reform. He speaks five languages and is the current Director of Research for The Black Box project on residential facilities of mental health and drug abuse service users in Finland. He is also a journalist, writer, poet and music producer presenting both residential and international artists from around the world. He has produced and performed over sixteen music and radio dramas and has published eight books both in social and musical subjects since 1992. His new book Spirituality in African-American Music is due be released by Aviador Publishing, Helsinki in 2024.

Berkeley's Finnish Kaleva Hall was built in 1932 by local immigrant families. It is home to the Berkeley Finnish Heritage Society, and is also used by many local artists and community groups. Spaces are available to rent for classes, rehearsals, events, lectures, and more.
