Yom Hazikaron Ceremony

Presented by Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto

Join our community for a Memorial Day ceremony for Israel's Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism. The evening will include songs, readings, presentations and remarks from community leaders, led by teens from our local community.

In memory of the heroes and heroines of October 7th and the Iron Swords war

This multimedia stage experience incorporates songs and videos with live music, together with touching documentary scenes and high-tech video artwork, effects and lighting. In the interest of maximizing accessibility for wide-reaching audiences, the storytelling and speaking parts are in English.

Singer-songwriter Gilad Segev, who leads the project, hopes that honoring and educating about these Jewish heroes and their historical counterparts will help instill a new sense of pride, healing, strength and unity for Jews, both in Israel and throughout the Diaspora.

About Yom Hazikaron

Yom Hazikaron is Israel's official Memorial Day, a somber Day of Remembrance for the Fallen Soldiers of Israel and Victims of Terrorism, enacted into law in 1963. Among those now remembered are those lost during the October 7 attack and the continuing violence.

As of Yom Hazikaron 2022, the number of fallen soldiers and victims of terror was 24,068. The day opens with a siren which is also heard the preceding evening all over the country. It lasts for one minute, during which time Israelis stop everything (including driving, which stops traffic on highways) and stand in silence, commemorating the fallen and showing respect.

A two-minute siren is sounded at 11:00 AM the following day, which marks the opening of the official memorial ceremonies and private remembrance gatherings at each cemetery where soldiers are buried. Places of public entertainment are closed for 24 hours (from sunset to sunset).

That evening, as Yom Hazikaron comes to an end, celebrations begin for Yom Ha'atzmaut.
