Mutual Admiration: Gershwin and Ravel

Presented by Music@Menlo

Maurice Ravel and George Gershwin came face to face in New York in 1928, at a celebration of Ravel’s birthday. The French composer was impressed with Gershwin’s impromptu performance of Rhapsody in Blue, and during a four-month tour of the United States, introduced audiences to works such as Daphnis et Chloe and La Valse. Ravel soaked up the sounds of American jazz at the Savoy Ballroom and Cotton Club in Harlem, where he heard Duke Ellington play. The “mutual admiration” between Ravel and Gershwin is the inspiration behind Music@Menlo’s upcoming Explorers Series program, created and presented by violinist Kristin Lee and pianist Orion Weiss. ***This online concert is available to view, on-demand, for one week. It includes a short musical discussion with the artists to deepen your listening experience.*** Purchase tickets here: https://tickets.musicatmenlo.org/TheatreManager/1/online?event=0
