From Laughter to Fire

Presented by Mission Chamber Orchestra of San Jose

Alex Eisenberg, Violin and Stephanie Sanchez, Mezzo-Soprano

Mission Chamber Orchestra of San José is delighted to present "From Laughter to Fire" on Saturday, March 1st at 7:30pm at the Hammer Theatre Center. Our new Music Director, Juan Cristóbal Palacios, has chosen a program of music offering complements and dramatic contrasts, and you'll enjoy two thrilling soloists in a musical journey through different emotions and geographic locations.

Violinist Alex Eisenberg is soloist for Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, composed in 1880 for the Spanish virtuoso Pablo Sarasate. The concerto demonstrates Saint-Saëns' distinctive style - combining elegant French melodic writing with brilliant virtuosic display.  The concerto showcases both the violin's singing qualities and its capacity for dazzling technical display. Eisenberg is an internationally acclaimed artist whose musical legacy traces back to the great Russian tradition through his grandfather, renowned pedagogue Michael Greenberg. A gold medalist at Italy's Michelangelo Abbado Violin Competition and winner of France's Concorso Internationale Rameu, Eisenberg has performed with prestigious ensembles across Europe and the Americas and is music director of the Capriccio Chamber Orchestra.

The evening also features mezzo-soprano Stephanie Sánchez, bringing her remarkable artistry to Manuel de Falla's dramatic and powerful tale of love and death, El Amor Brujo (Love, the Magician). Sanchez has been captivating audiences across the American opera landscape. Opera News praised her "polished, Italianate mezzo," while KHDX Saint Louis celebrated her "impressive combination of vocal power and comic flair." She has performed with prestigious companies including The Lyric Opera of Chicago and Seattle Opera, and her recent accolades include the Audience Choice Award at the 2021 Jensen Foundation Competition and the 2018 Igor Gorin Memorial Award. Local opera lovers will know her from her residency as a principal artist with Opera San José.
