Program:
String Quartet in C Major Op.33, No.3 “The Bird", Haydn – subtitled “The Bird” because of its distinctive birdlike trills and grace note ornaments.
“Dover Beach” for String Quartet and Baritone, Samuel Barber - Barber’s setting of Matthew Arnold’s poem evokes the waves on the ocean and the reflection of the moon on the water.
Auf dem Flusse (On the River), Franz Schubert - Schubert is famous for his depictions of nature in his Lieder and these selections depict the rippling river, a violent winter storm and a capricious trout darting to and fro in a clear brook
String Quartet in F Major, Maurice Ravel - Ravel’s use of musical “impressionism” evokes many possibilities to the listener, such as a sunrise in the opening theme, or fierce gusts of wind in the finale.
