Composed in a lush, post-Wagnerian idiom, Schoenberg’s “Songs of the Gurre Castle,” taken together, are a massive, ambitious epic about love, death, and nature. Calling for five vocal soloists, a narrator, three male choruses, a large mixed chorus, and a tremendous orchestra (including ten horns and four harps!), it uses its extravagant forces to tell of a tragic love triangle.
