Course Description:
This 4 week series will trace the roots, culture and evolution of jazz and related forms. The course will also highlight its roles as a catalyst for political and social change.
Week 1: Black Music (From work songs through Reconstruction to the Jazz Age)
Week 2: The Jazz Effect in the 20th century (Integration, The Harlem Renaissance, Ellington, Be-bop and beyond)
Week 3: Jazz, Funk and Politics (Black and Blue) (Andy Razaf - (Black and Blue), Billie Holiday (Strange Fruit), Marcus Garvey, Malcom X The Beat Generation, Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Nina Simone, John Coltrane Gil Scott-Heron, Sly Stone and Funkadelic)
Week 4: Lingua Franca (The Jazz Diaspora in the 21st century)
