This is a 4 part series: Date & Time: Thursdays at 6 pm PST, October 15, 22, 29, & November 5, 2020 Course Description: OUR VOICE is our primal power & rhythm is the heartbeat of the universe. How can we invite the medicine of sound into our lives to heal our spirits, unleash our purpose, and create new stories that bring forth a just and flourishing world? Tap into your creativity with the way you use your voice and your words by learning the basics of song structure, lyric and rhyming technique from jazz, rhythm & blues and international vocal stylings. Work on your power voice, stage presence, and learn high level harmonization and percussive vocalization with fellow singers and musicians! You will learn how to successfully center, have continuous breath, cone, circle sing, harmonize and so much more. Music is a healing force that holds the power to uplift and transform us all. This is an opportunity to connect with a diverse and inspiring group of people; to be uplifted by music, singing, poetry, and story; and to experience the transformative power of community through music as medicine. It is time to be seen BY BEING HEARD, and make a ROUSING LOUD AND LASTING difference. Prerequisites or Materials Needed in Advance of Course: N/A Artist Biography: Winner of eight Washington Area Music Association Awards, including Best Jazz Vocalist, Best Urban Contemporary Vocalist, & Best World Music Vocalist, Ami has been proclaimed as one of the “purest contemporary voices” by National Public Radio, and MTV describes her sound “…like listening to velvet waterfalls”. A Cultural Arts Ambassador for UNHCR and the State Department, and highly sought-after performer and public speaker, she travels worldwide doing expansive work with political refugees appearing regularly on National and International television and radio. She has studied, recorded with, and shared the stage with award-winning speakers and musicians including Take 6, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Pete Seeger, Gil Scot Heron, Angela Davis, Esperanza Spalding, Sheila E, Melody Gardot, 2Baba, Salif Keita, Richard Bona, Baba Olutunji, Mickey Hart, Goapele, Linda Tillery, Vicki Randall, Ferron, Ron Holloway, and performed in India at personal invitation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She is the proud recipient of the UN Global Woman Award, Voss Women Leaders Award, and International Hero for Peace & Forgiveness award and was named best female composer in 2006, 2008, and 2011 by the State Arts Council of Maryland. Amikaeyla works nationally and internationally as a professional vocal performance coach and has produced, written and directed for Theater, Radio, TV, & Film, giving her an intimate in-depth ability to guide students in the art of successful audition and performance. Her stylized techniques for instruction have been used for singers, actors and speakers and she often serves as a Celebrity Judge for National and International versions of “The Idol”. She specializes in Musical Theater, R&B, World, Folk, Soul, Gospel, Funk, and Jazz and through extensive formal training in anatomy and human kinetics, Amikaeyla has worked with many clients to assist with vocal node repair. She focuses on ways to augment and sustain vocal power throughout the length of a performance by strengthening the falsetto, tessitura, and vibrato to prepare you to be a better musician and more in demand vocalist.
