Left Coast Chamber Ensemble presents Soft-Spoken

Left Coast Chamber Ensemble opens its new season of virtual concerts with Soft-Spoken, featuring flutist Stacey Pelinka in a newly commissioned work from the multi-talented artist David Dominique, along with a duo for flute and cello by Laurie San Martin, Beethoven’s Serenade, and a jazz influenced trio from French composer Albert Roussel. The concert also includes Kurt Rohde’s remixes of songs by Hildegard von Bingen and Joni Mitchell. The performance will be streamed live, free of charge on www.youtube.com/leftcoastensemble. Soft-Spoken is also the title for the new trio for flute, viola, and cello by the versatile composer/performer David Dominique that receives its world premiere at this concert. Dominique’s output includes jazz, chamber music, electronic music, rock and theater. Left Coast’s composer/violist/artistic advisor Kurt Rohde commissioned the new work through the Kurt Rhode commission fund. “David is a performer, composer, journalist, educator, and activist, and he does it all with originality, rigor, intelligence and heart,” said Rohde. Left Coast flutist Stacey Pelinka is joined by Rohde (viola) and Leighton Fong (cello) for the premiere performance of this piece. The concert includes two new remixes by Rohde, Ave Maria by Hildegard von Bingen and Blue by Joni Mitchell. “I know the original works are amazing, and I don’t think of these remixes as versions of them, but rather re-imaginings” explained Rohde. “The music has always resonated with me as so beautiful, so powerful. I was drawn to the possibility of putting that music through my imagination, in the way I hear it, and seeing what comes out.” Completing the program are two classic trios, Serenade in D Major for Flute, Violin and Viola, Op. 25 by Beethoven and Trio for Flute, Viola, and Cello, Op. 40 by Albert Roussel, along with Zeppelin, a duo for flute and cello by contemporary composer Laurie San Martin.
