Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento comes to Napa with a wonderful holiday entertainment, a pair of short operas specially composed for the season, perfect for families, and for music and theater lovers of all ages.
Amahl and the Night Visitors tells the story of a poor shepherd boy in the Holy Land, Amahl, and his mother, who provide hospitality to unexpected, fabulous visitors -- Three Wise Men, kings following a glorious star. It was a Christmastime TV tradition for many years, rebroadcast and revived in new production, and remains a favorite in live performances around the world, full of warmth, humor, and beautiful music.
A new work, in its West Coast premiere, will open the performance. Four Lost Santas, commissioned by Orlando Opera, is a comic gem, the story of a men's quartet having some trouble on their journey to a Santa Claus convention, and a mother and son hurrying on their way to perform in Amahl, who stop to help.
Stage directed by Robert Vann, with an orchestra led by Anne-Marie Endres, presented in the lovely 'jewel-box' theater at the Jarvis Conservatory.
