The First Congregational Church of Oakland will present in concert trumpeter Ralph T. Dudgeon and organist Ken Herman on Saturday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. Their program will include festive Baroque works for organ and trumpet—Johann Fasch’s D Major Trumpet Concerto and Giovanni Viviani’s Sonata Prima—as well as contemporary works by American composers Alan Hovhaness and Vincent Persichetti. A suite of Leonard Bernstein songs arranged for trumpet will demonstrate a contrasting style of trumpet performance.
In addition, the church’s substantial, historic Moller pipe organ will sound forth in Dietrich Buxtehude’s majestic Prelude and Fugue in G Minor, William Boyce’s Symphony in B-flat Major, and a contemporary variation cycle on the popular Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts.”
Trumpeter Ralph T. Dudgeon is an Emeritus Professor of Music with the State University of New York, Cortland, where he taught music and conducted the university orchestra. Ken Herman is the Director of Music and Organist Laureate of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, where he performed frequently as both soloist and accompanist on that congregation’s concert series. Dudgeon and Herman formed a trumpet and organ duo when Dudgeon was completing his doctoral studies at the University of California San Diego.
This varied and audience-friendly concert will benefit the First Congregational Church of Oakland and Gamaliel of California, a statewide organization that supports community-based social justice work.
