Charlie Gurke will present a session focused on the inspiration and motivation he receives from colleagues and collaborators. As a freelance musician and educator active in a variety of music scenes and contexts, Charlie has had the opportunity to interact with a wide range of musicians and artists who bring with them a vast array of unique talents and backgrounds. He’ll share moments of inspiration describing the artistry, creativity, and commitment these artists display, illustrating how inspiration motivates Charlie to work, to create, and to think differently.

About the Artist: Charlie Gurke is a Bay Area-based saxophonist, composer, and educator. In addition to leading various incarnations of his Gurkestra, Charlie is a member of the John Santos Sextet, The Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, Edgardo Cambon’s groups Candela and Latido. An active freelancer, Charlie regularly performs and records with collaborators in a variety of genres. Since 2010 Charlie has been composer and music director for We Players theater company, composing scores for nearly all their productions and receiving Theatre Bay Area awards for his scores for Macbeth (2014) and Caesar Maximus (2018). Charlie teaches at Laney College in Oakland, and at Community Music Center in San Francisco.

CMC Sessions: Inspiration & Influences is an eight-part on-line series hosted by CMC Cultural Traditions and Winds/Brass Departments, providing up-close and personal stories about the potent influences and galvanizing experiences that make up the “musical life.” Told through compelling demonstrations, musical examples, and creative tips, the sessions will provide participants with inspiration on their musical journeys.
