Shostakovich's Piano Quintet in g minor, both intimate and grand in scale was written at the height of Stalinist cultural repression.
Worlds away in 1920's Paris, Milhaud's celebrated La Creation du Monde was written for chamber orchestra as a ballet depicting an African creation story, then rewritten by the compose for piano quintet.
